Sir Paul Holmes has been admitted to hospital only a week after receiving his knighthood.

A statement released this afternoon by his wife Lady Deborah Holmes and his brother, Ken, said he was in a stable condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital. His family had gathered to be close to him.

Holmes, 62, who ended his broadcasting career in November because of poor health, was a late addition to the New Year honours list, being made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

A specially arranged investiture ceremony was held at his Hawke's Bay home last Wednesday. It was brought forward because he has been battling heart problems and the return of prostate cancer.

Holmes suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic heart condition which thickens the muscles and restricts blood flow, and underwent surgery early last year. He was back in hospital in October after contracting an infection.

He was proud of his new title after receiving his knighthood to a standing ovation from more than 100 people who gathered for the occasion.

"It's nice to be Sir and Lady. I want everyone to call me Sir, I'm unashamed - as you would expect."

Holmes said the ceremony meant a lot to him and his family and that his late parents would have been "over the moon".

"My mother would be immensely proud - she'd be giving me advice right up until the last minute."

At the ceremony he emphasised the love and support he'd received from his wife.

"My wife and I have grown closer and I want to thank you baby," he said, reaching for her hand.

Holmes has been open about his illness.

"It's not good. There's a time limitation now - the old cancer found me out and is starting to do some funny things."
