The battle for TV Guide's Best on the Box awards is in full swing, with 70,000 votes already cast.

In the two hotly contested categories of New Zealand's sexiest actor and actress a tight race between viewer favourites is shaping up after the first week of voting.

Anna Hutchison, who plays Amy on Go Girls, is currently leading the field of nominees for the Sexiest Woman with Breakfast host Toni Street hot on her heels and the rest not too far behind, TV Guide editor Julie Eley revealed.

The competition for the Sexiest Man is even closer with Go Girls actor Jay Ryan (Kevin) and Shortland Street's Ben Mitchell (TK) neck-and-neck with 20 percent of the votes each and only one percent ahead of Mark Richardson of The Crowd Goes Wild and The Block NZ.

Shane Cortese (Mac, Nothing Trivial and Colin, The Almighty Johnsons) is well ahead of the other nominees for Best Actor and could be hard to catch, even with two voting weeks ahead.

Best Actress is a four way race with Shavaughn Ruakere (Roimata, Shortland Street) marginally in front of Anna Hutchison, Nicole Whippy (Michelle, Nothing Trivial) and Amanda Billing.

It would seem 7 Days has really hit a chord with New Zealand sitting on 49 percent of the votes for Best Comedy and regular team leader Dai Henwood leading James McOnie, Jeremy Corbet and Leigh Hart for Funniest Person on TV.

"If you don't like the results to date, then I would encourage you to be heard and vote," Eley said.

Voting forms will be published again in this week's TV Guide or you can vote online at www.bestonthebox.co.nz.

Voting closes on Friday 8 March with the winners announced in TV Guide on-sale 21 March.
