NEW LOOK: Telecom is attempting to spruce up its image with a new corporate logo.

Telecom is attempting to spruce up its image with a new corporate logo, an abstract design that a spokeswoman said did not allude to anything and that customers could interpret as they liked.

Retail head Alan Gourdie said Telecom's new brand was designed to be "less about us" and more about customers.

"Where previously it stood for telecommunications services, wires and networks, it now reflects New Zealanders doing what inspires them, and doing it on their terms."

The design, created by Auckland firm Designworks, got the thumbs-up from John Hatrick-Smith, a design specialist with Better By Design, a department of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

"It's bright and it's fresh and very different to what one might ordinarily expect from a telecommunications company. It's got lots of energy and lots of excitement."

Telecom could not confirm how much it would spend on the makeover. Its last "pixel-block" logo, unveiled in 2003, cost $140,000.

The company had a laser show on the Auckland waterfront to unveil the new logo late last night.

Smaller events were held for staff in other cities.

Delayed post but still

Its funny how we are having a recession and they justify to their workers that they cannot afford to give them pay raises BUT they manage to scrap a BIG FAT WAD OF CASH for their logo....

When I first saw this logo, I thought it was Meridian at a first glance... Plus, Telecom is the only company I know who keep changing it's logo

Well I think its a bit basic for a telecommunications company and it looks like someone has had a good old scribble on Paint and then Just put it forward as an idea I dont like it

What is this ridiculous logo... you'd be much better using 2degrees so they keep paying me for crap ads. Maybe since this logo is so much about us they'll decide to stop holding NZ back on the Telecommunications front now...

looks like something you would make from a Photoshop tutorial. Its going to out date quickly. Also looks horrible on the All Blacks Jersey
