Air New Zealand's money man has walked away with the supreme award for the country's top financial officer.

The inaugural national CFO Awards were declared tonight, with the airline's Chief Financial Officer Rob McDonald winning.

His leadership and innovation within the company drew praise from the three person judging panel.

Vice President Finance at New Zealand Steel Anthony Burg, one of the judges, said McDonald's contribution to the culture of Air New Zealand stood out from the other finalists.

The role of the CFO had become increasingly important during the financial crisis, which was an underlying theme in the presentations to judges, Burg said.

Also handed out tonight was the Finance Team of the Year. That award went to the engineering group Beca.

BNZ claimed the prize for Project Initiative of the Year for its Business Intelligence Centre of Excellence.

The inaugural awards were sponsored by Ernst & Young and presented by Fairfax Media Business Group and Conferenz.
