Underwear and socks are in demand as Cantabrians caught out by the earthquake restock on bare essentials.

Jill McDavitt, owner of Haydn's Menswear and Boys Schoolwear, said she had sold a lot of underwear. Most customers had been unable to do any washing because their power was out or it was too inconvenient, but some had not been able to get fresh clothing, she said.

"We had a young guy who lives in the central city in yesterday.

"His parents had come up from Invercargill and brought him in here and he said to us, `My underwear has been sticking to parts of my body for longer than I care to mention'. We laughed and said that was too much information, but he was still wearing the underwear yesterday that he took off in on Sunday morning when he left his flat."

Customers had also been buying dress pants and shirts, and one had stopped in on his way to a funeral because he had no clean socks.
