Christchurch pop-up mall may be world first

Possibly the world's first pop-up container shopping precinct is fast taking shape in Christchurch's City Mall as workers pull out all the stops to get it finished for Cup and Show Week in three weeks.
The painters are busy, and landscaping will begin soon. Dust and shingle will be covered by tarseal and seats, and trees will soften the hard lines of the creatively placed containers.
The Restart the Heart initiative is using more than 60 shipping containers to house 27 temporary shops by October 29, providing a central-city retail hub for Cup and Show Week.
When it opens, the City Mall should have two temporary shopping precincts on either side of the street, arranged in a horseshoe around two two-storey cafes.
The programme is funded by a $3.5 million government loan that will have to be repaid.
