Contact Energy is welcoming the granting of resource consents for a geothermal power station in Taupo.
Contact received approval for the 220 megawatt Te Mihi geothermal power station over the weekend.
Contact chief executive David Baldwin said Te Mihi was a nationally significant generation project that would provide the country with enough renewable, baseload energy to power more than 200,000 homes.
"Geothermal projects like Te Mihi will make an important contribution towards a secure supply of electricity while at the same time moving towards a higher renewables future," Baldwin said.
He said good progress was being made on the development of three new geothermal power stations totaling about 500 megawatts.
"In addition to the granting of resource consents for the Te Mihi project, discussions with potential construction contractors for the Te Mihi power station are advancing on schedule."
