The legend of kiwifruit, New Zealand's unique green and gold furry berries, keeps on growing. A record 100 millionth tray was sent overseas yesterday, capping a best-ever season for growers.
To celebrate the occasion, marketer Zespri released little-known facts about the fruit:100 million trays of kiwifruit would be enough to fill 92 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
If placed end on end, the trays would wrap around the world five times.Every minute, all over the world, more than 5000 pieces of kiwifruit are being eaten.
At a ceremony in Tauranga yesterday, the growers of the 100 millionth fruit, Grant and Adele Fowlie, of Te Puke, were honoured.
This season's volume is more than double the kiwifruit shipment of 10 years ago and growers are expected to share in a $780 million payout.
