Auckland Transport has ended its contract with Snapper cards after the Wellington-based company failed to upgrade its system by a council-set deadline.
The decision to terminate the agreement with Snapper was reached this afternoon, Auckland Transport chief executive David Warburton said in a statement.
Warburton said the contract was terminated "in the interests of protecting Aucklanders' money and progressing the essential outcome of a first-class integrated ticketing programme for public transport in the region".
"This is a regrettable decision."
Warburton said Snapper had agreed to have its equipment compliant with the integrated ticketing system, being developed by French firm Thales, by November 30, but Auckland Transport had decided the company was not going to meet the deadline.
"Given Snapper's delay, and now this termination, Auckland Transport has made a commitment with Thales to deliver a bus solution for Auckland's bus operators.
"HOP/Snapper card users on NZ Bus services will continue to use their current cards until their cards will be swapped out for free next year. The new cards will be known as AT/HOP cards.
"Meanwhile, Auckland Transport will introduce AT HOP on trains and ferries on schedule over the next two months, with rail introduced on 28 October and ferry by 30 November. Bus rollout will commence from April next year".
Warburton said the solution brought certainty to the introduction of integrated ticketing in Auckland.
Mayor Len Brown said Aucklanders had waited ''too long to use an integrated ticket across the region's trains, ferries and buses. Now our involvement with Snapper has been terminated, we can get on with delivering a single system across the network, our original preferred option".
"I'm disappointed that this situation has held up the completed project, but it gives us the chance to roll out a single system we confidently know will work across the region."
