Finalists of this year's Air New Zealand Cargo ExportNZ Awards have been revealed - and dairying dominates among the big firms.

The awards judges have selected 25 finalists in seven categories, from Waikato, Auckland and Northland.

The three finalists for the award for the biggest exporters, with export revenue over $25 million, are all dairying firms: Fonterra, Milk New Zealand Dairy and New Zealand New Milk.

New Zealand New Milk started as a three-person team in 2011 and six years later has 120 staff, making consumer-ready baby formula. Milk New Zealand Dairy looks after the export of the Milk New Zealand Group, improving the quality and reputation of value-added New Zealand dairy products internationally.

Among other categories, there is a wide range of businesses represented.

ABE's Real Bagels is recognised for its work taking bagels to Australia, the Hobbiton Movie Set for its role as a services exporter and Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry for its exporting role in thoroughbred racing, breeding and horse exportation.

"At ExportNZ we're all about exporters helping exporters. Therefore the awards are a time when we take stock and celebrate the success of our peers and acknowledge the peaks and troughs they have traversed to get there," said Catherine Lye, regional manager of ExportNZ Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

"We have a diverse range of finalists, from emerging to established sectors, from small to large companies, and I'm delighted with the calibre of finalists we have in this year's awards," she said.

For the year ended June 2016 exports of goods and services accounted for 28 per cent or $70.9 billion of New Zealand's gross domestic product. The goal is to build this to 40 per cent by 2025.
