The Opuha dam irrigation scheme will operate on ‘no restrictions’ for the first time since November 2014.

Chief executive of Opuha Water Ltd Tony McCormick has announced the Opuha dam irrigation scheme will operate on 'no restrictions' for irrigation and river flows for the rest of the season. It is the first time since November 2014 that the company has been in a position of operating without restrictions.

"What a turnaround for us here at Opuha," McCormick said. "At New Year, we were looking down the barrel of a couple of months on fifty percent restrictions. The rain events in January have made a very significant difference to our water storage. It is the compounding effects of increased inflows and reduced demand and lake releases that can see the situation turn around so quickly."
