The last ewe fair for the season at Sheffield had close to 9500 ewes yarded.

Ewes came from as far away as Kaikoura and mid-Canterbury last week, with two tooth ewes ranging from $100 to $150 and most of them staying in the central Canterbury area.

In the older ewe section selling was harder and ewes with poorer teeth or in lower condition met with weaker bidding. Prices ranged from $60 to $90 with the odd sale to $100.

Since the ewe fairs began at Hawarden in January market prices have eased after each sale due to feed conditions, along with a further reduction in the meat schedules and a lack of confidence in the sheep industry.

There was good competition for well-bred and presented two tooth ewes. The top price was $154 for border leicester romney first cross ewes and other good lines made between $130 and $148.
