An elderly man has been found dead on a rural Bay of Plenty property.

Emergency Services were called to the property in Awakeri, near Whakatane at about 9.25 this morning.

It appeared the man had been on a quad bike, but it is unclear if the bike played a role in the man's death.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
