Nissan is set to take on the king of the tradies, Toyota's HiLux with an all-new Navara ute.

The Japanese manufacturer has revealed the first details of its 12th generation tray-back that will arrive in New Zealand in the first quarter of 2015.

In New Zealand, the ute market has been one of the new car market's most successful segments in recent years, and the NP300 Navara will go into battle with cars such as the HiLux, Ford Ranger and Holden Colorado that are big sellers in NZ.

Nissan has not yet confirmed prices or specifications for the Navara.

The brand says it will offer "greater durability and more efficient performance" than before.

The Navara will be available with a choice of wide or narrow body styles, with single-cab, dual-cab and king-cab options on the menu.

Nissan says it has a smaller turning circle than its predecessor, and that four-wheel-drive models will feature the ability to switch between drive modes while on the move.

The ute's new look includes LED daytime running lights that frame a bold, chrome-finished grille.

It features what Nissan describes as a "V-motion motif" that extends from the grille and over the wheel arches to deeply sculpted doors.

On the inside, the car has a revised interior with a new steering wheel and metal-look highlights that give a more car-like impression.
