A man is dead after the tractor he was driving ended up down a bank north of Taumarunui this morning.

The crash happened in Ongarue-Waimiha Rd near the outskirts of the Ongarue village about 10am.

Police said the man, in his 20s, was towing haymaking equipment. The tractor came to rest down a bank on some railway tracks.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
