Man dead after tractor rolls down bank

A man is dead after the tractor he was driving ended up down a bank north of Taumarunui this morning.

The crash happened in Ongarue-Waimiha Rd near the outskirts of the Ongarue village about 10am.

Police said the man, in his 20s, was towing haymaking equipment. The tractor came to rest down a bank on some railway tracks.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The serious crash unit and Taumarunui police are investigating.

The railway tracks are closed until a scene examination is completed.

Police will not release any further details about the man until his next of kin have been informed.
