Prime ewe prices rise at Coalgate

Light to medium prime ewes rose $5 to $8 a head as prices for heavier ewes remained unchanged at livestock sales at Coalgate last week.

Prime lambs

Values: The prime lamb market was again strong with a price lift for medium lambs at $2 to $3 a head. The lighter end were well supported by store lamb buyers which is holding up the market. Tops made $130-$143, good $116-$125, medium $109-$115 and light $98-$105.

Prime ewes

Values: The heavy ewe market plateaued on previous weeks but the medium to lighter weight ewes lifted by $5 to $8 a head. The first of the better-conditioned scanned dry ewes were hitting the market and the quality has begun to lift which was being reflected higher prices. Tops made $115-$125, good $105-$110, medium $85-$95, light $70-$80.

Sales included: Gleneyre Ltd (Oxford) 110 ewes at $60-$67, T & J Cameron P/ship (Waikari) 67 es at $88-$109, C Ridgen (Greendale) 66 es at $80-$96, Maungatahi Farm (Waipara) 54 es at $89-$116.

Store lambs

Values: Steady lamb quality generated a minor lift in the market by $2 to $3 a head from the previous week. Tops made $88-$94, good $80-$90, medium $75-$80 and light $68-$75.

Sales included: Eveshame Farm Ltd (Greta Valley) 120 lambs at $83-$91, Benmore Graziers (Whitecliffs) 99 lms at $81-$92, DC & LJ Adkins P/ship (Amberley) 90 lms at $72-$88, ML & KE Crampton (Cheviot) 45 lms at $80-$85, LW & LM Webb (Omihi) 42 lms at $95, DG Spencer (Cheviot) 40 lms at $74-$86.

Prime cattle

Values: A nice line up of quality prime cattle was met by prices rising over all classes. Steers made $2.20/kg - $2.40, heifers $2.07 - $2.46 and cows $1.10 - $1.67.

Store cattle

Values: In a rain-affected yarding of mostly light weight rising two year old cattle prices remaining static at previous sales. Two-year-old steers made $1.90/kg-$2 and two-year-old heifers $1.80-$1.90.

Sales included: CE & AM Douglas (Sheffield) 9 rising two year old steers at $800-$835, KL & HF Roberts (Amberley) 9 R2 heifers at $500-$590, G Blair (Ashburton) 5 18mth strs at $485, 1 18mth hfr at $345 and 1 18mth bull at $300.
