Vendors selling their ewes at the Tekapo ewe fair on Thursday went home 'very happy' according to PGGWrightson Timaru livestock manager, Joe Higgins.

"It was a very strong sale, with very good prices, in complete contrast to the lamb sale held a week earlier," he said.

"Most of the top cuts made between $90 to $100, with merino ewes from Guide Hill making $100 each.

"Second cuts sold between $75 to $85 and third cuts $65 to $75."

Two-tooths also proved to be in demand. "The best of these made between $100 to $114, with Meikleburn Station selling the top lots at $114. Second cuts made from $70 to $90."

More than 10,000 merino ewes were yarded.

Stock from Streamlands Station came to the sale the old-fashioned way - driven on the hoof to the sale centre, attended by shepherds and dogs.

The Mackenzie Waitaki merino ram sale followed the ewes and 23 of the lots on offer sold.

"The rams averaged around $900 each with the top lot making $3000 and others around the $1000 mark.

"All told, a very solid sale with breeders of fine wool looking to boost ewe numbers," Mr Higgins said.

Earlier in the day, the Omarama ewe sale had a smaller yarding of around 3500 head and prices paid regarded as "sound".

PGGWrightson Oamaru livestock manager Mark Yeates said the sale was sound with prices ranging from $76 to $85 for six-year-old ewes.

"The prices were up to expectations and the values provided good buying opportunities," he said.

"One of the top pens was offered by Waitangi Station and sold for $85 per head."
