Sky to launch video on demand
Sky Television will launch a subscription video-on-demand television service by the end of the year that will sit separate from its existing broadcast service.
The company has not finalised what shows or movies it will offer or what they will cost.
The move had been strongly hinted at by Sky which has acknowledged there is a growing group of young, tech-savvy people it is not catering for effectively with its broadcast service.
Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services let people watch programmes at a time of their choosing over the internet, in the same way as they might watch YouTube videos.
The timing of the announcement by Sky TV scotches the main basis for speculation it might be negotiating to buy internet provider Orcon though the broadcaster has continued to refuse to comment on that speculation.
Orcon director Warren Hurst indicated on Friday that work on the sale of the company was being progressed over the weekend but was unable to provide an on-record update yesterday.
Sky's SVOD service will compete with existing internet-based services already available in New Zealand. These include Quickflix, Ezyflix and PremierLeaguePass, which streams English premier league football matches, as well as an SVOD service that Telecom plans to launch next month.
Sky TV chief executive John Fellet said its broadcast pay-television customers would get its SVOD service free-of-charge and it would also be bundled with Vodafone's broadband plans.
