A North Canterbury business that composted cattle heads and ears for a gelatine factory was forced to stop taking the waste after complaints about the smell from neighbours.

T W Transport's composting facility at Burnt Hill, Oxford, has been fined seven times by Environment Canterbury (ECan) for odour issues in breach of its resource consent.

Company director Ted Wills said it stopped taking the waste from Gelita NZ Ltd because of the complaints. "If there was a smell out our way, even among the farms spraying effluent on paddocks or silage, we still got the blame," he said.

The Gelita factory was embroiled in controversy earlier this year for causing a stink in Woolston.

ECan fined Gelita three times in January last year, and again in January and April this year for odour problems.

Gelita's resource consent says no objectionable smells are allowed but a series of problems with the factory led to odours.

Gelita plant manager Gary Monk said it used T W Transport until February.

It now sent solid waste to Kate Valley landfill in Waipara.

T W Transport was fined seven times - $6250 in total for permitting an odour of composting "which was objectionable" beyond the "property boundary".

Environment Canterbury said there had been no complaints about odour since mid-May.

Gelita has asked ECan for temporary changes to its resource consent to allow earthquake repairs.
