About-turn for migration

A strong turnaround in migration has been bolstered by a net inflow of 300 people during March.
In March last year there was a net outflow of 1000 people leaving permanently for other countries, and the latest figures show the turnaround in Kiwis seeking new lives overseas.
There were 800 fewer people leaving for Australia, comprising the majority of 1000 fewer departures overall.
The Statistics New Zealand figures prompted analysts to predict the trend of fewer departures would continue in the uncertain global climate, and create a steady inflow of migrants, both expatriate Kiwis and foreigners.
"We expect annual inflows are likely to reach 10,000-15,000 per annum," ASB economist Jane Turner said.
"The pickup in net migration will provide some support to cyclically weak areas, such as retail spending and housing construction."
About 14,000 new houses were being built in New Zealand a year and Federation of Master Builders chief executive Warwick Quinn said that was about 8000 short of the number needed.
