Listed health products innovator Fisher & Paykel Healthcare has launched a new device for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea it hopes will win as many points for its stylish good looks as its improved technology.

The new ICON continuous positive air way pressure devices which look like a bedside clock and feature digital clock, alarm and music playing abilities have been introduced into the New Zealand and Australian markets.

FPH is awaiting clearance from US authorities to launch them in its biggest obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)market.

The devices were three years in development and have been trialled in New Zealand with clinical validation trials in the US, said chief executive Michael Daniell.

The devices have several improved technical features but Mr Daniell says the company is most excited about the ICON range’s good looks.

“It looks wonderful. In medical devices this is not normally important, but this is at home and by the bedside. It looks like it belongs. “

The new product range incorporates FPH’s most innovative technologies including SmartStick, ThermoSmart and SensAwake and offers three models.

All feature compliance reporting technology, so doctors can monitor patient usage of the device.

In FPH’s key US market this is a particularly important feature because federal insurers will not pay for treatment devices unless it can be proved the patient is complying with treatment.

Mr Daniell said FPH is hoping the new devices will help it grow market share in the lucrative global OSA treatment market.

FPH shares were up 2c at $3.31 shortly after today's announcement.
