IKEA no closer despite Facebook fans

Kiwi fans of the Swedish furniture outlet IKEA face an indeterminate wait for the brand to arrive in this country.
Perth-based Cebas is the IKEA franchise holder for Western Australia and South Australia. It also holds the rights to open New Zealand's first branch of the flat-pack furniture retailer. But despite rumours of an imminent launch, the company has decided not to proceed.
"We have stopped looking for a site for the present time," said the franchisee's Auckland retail consultant Paul Keane, from RCG, after he received a call from IKEA putting the brakes on his firm's site-hunting.
The company has faced setbacks in its almost four-year pursuit of a site. The Environment Court ruled in 2008 that the company could not be a tenant in Mt Wellington retail development Redwoods because of concerns its popularity would cause traffic chaos.
Hamilton then put its hand up in late 2009 to host an IKEA outlet. Its economic development agency invited IKEA scouts to visit the city, but the response was reported to be lukewarm from the Australian franchise owner.
Currently a Facebook fan page calling for a New Zealand IKEA store is "liked" by 5073 people.
The fan page includes a call for a petition, numerous threads on message boards which bemoan New Zealand's sans-IKEA-status and even 66 people lobbying for a Wellington branch.

Bollocks. I am interested in Ikea because they have certain items I need that are only available here either custom built or extortionately expensive, usually both.
I whole heartdly concur with # 92, on this blog seems that no one has money or taste for anything discerning or of long lasting quality. Wendy @ 91 not sure what you mean, but seems as though that person is making sense, Ronan does seem a bit high and mighty, seems that no one is ever happy with their lot in life. Could not give a Monkeys about another overseas owned company dumping their Chinese made inferior products on us, just shows as a country we want to be the same as the rest of the world, what a tradgedy.
Ikea is for people that have no discernable taste and just want to follow the masses. All their stuff is tacky and mass produced. However, furniture is expensive in NZ so would be good for the people with no taste to have some choice.
@ #88
The truly depressing thing is that you actually believe that nonsense.
Ronan - absolutely agree. And I am a Kiwi.
"Seems this blog is about home sick Poms, and Kiwis who have just experienced their first big city and shop who are throwing crap at our wonderful nation. "
Yeah, that's it. Of course. They couldn't possibly be right, could they?
Ronan # 84. Sounds as if you have found your calling in Germany. Seems that you have become superior and you have only been to 32 countries, just starting out in life no doubt. I have been to over 120 countries travelled through them extensively as well in the last 61 years. Your blog makes no sense at all. If you want to be pretentious about yourself and derogatory about our country do it in your own head, heard the Germans lost the football this morning, they are so boring bit like your attitude. We are not 1970 as you suggest, there is only 3.8 million in NZ at one time and we already have the largest shopping floor space per head of population ratio than any other country in the world. So why import more, when we have quality here that is not generic mass produced and boring. That is why as New Zealanders we are unique, if we all thought the same, then it shows that no one is thinking. Enjoy Germany Ronan the conquerer.
Seems this blog is about home sick Poms, and Kiwis who have just experienced their first big city and shop who are throwing crap at our wonderful nation. If not happy look within yourself, there is a lot more to life than a cheap throw away shop called IKEA. Grow up people.
Money is not important in life,to real New Zealanders.
Well, my passport says "New Zealand" and I appear to be real. And money is pretty important to me and everyone else I know!
