Civil contracting group Fulton Hogan has been ordered to pay $180,000 following the death of a Greymouth contractor last year.

Kieran John Hudson, 22, died when a bitumen silo exploded on at Fulton Hogan's Greymouth site on September 4 last year.

Fulton Hogan later pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of a contractor's employee.

In Greymouth District Court today Judge Phil Moran ordered Fulton Hogan to pay Hudson's family $100, 000 for emotional harm and economic loss.

Moran also fined Fulton Hogan $80,000 which he told the court was a "proportionate response" to the company's offence and its "tragic consequences".
