TelstraClear has scotched suggestions it has booked an Auckland conference room for August 10 to announce the sale of the company to Vodafone.

The National Business Review reported on Saturday that TelstraClear had booked a conference room at the Spencer on Byron for a staff announcement yesterday or today, speculating that might be for a takeover announcement.

That report transpired not to be correct but NBR said today it had been advised of a booking for August 10.

TelstraClear spokesman Gary Bowering said the company had booked a conference room at the hotel that day, but said that was for an ''annual staff recognition programme and had nothing at all to do with anything else''.

He said TelstraClear regularly used the conference venue.

Telstra confirmed in statements to the NZX and ASX on June 5 that talks over the sale of TelstraClear to Vodafone were under way.

Telstra spokeswoman Nicole McKechnie said on Friday that the discussions were continuing but no agreement had been reached and she did not know when further information might be forthcoming.
