Kiwis go spring job hunting

Kiwis are taking the change in season as an opportunity to go job hunting, with activity outstripping the number of positions being advertised in September.

The latest data from recruitment website Seek.co.nz shows what while new job ads rose 0.1 per cent in the months, the deluge of applications led to a 1.9 per cent dip in the overall Seek Employment Index.

"Our research shows that 43 per cent of Kiwis are intending to secure a new job in the next 12 months, so this rise in applications is not unexpected," said Seek general manager Janet Faulding. "There has been an uncertainty during the economic downturn and a sense that job seekers are keeping their heads down, however... we're seeing a steady growth in applications."

The figures showed the most hotly contested roles last month were jobs in IT support, call centres, administration, retail and accounting administrators.

On an annual basis, Seek said the number of job ads had risen 6.5 per cent versus September last year, with growth being driven by the major centres.

Year-to-date, Auckland new job ads rose 2.7 per cent and Wellington rose 5.8 per cent. In Canterbury year-on-year job ads rose 17 per cent.

The figures showed the five hardest positions to fill in September were IT consultants, engineering managers, local government personnel, private practice lawyers and midwives.
