Trade Me has bought 15-year-old Richmond-based accommodation website Holidayhomes.co.nz, which provides a directory of about 3300 holiday homes and bachs for rent in New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Spokesman Paul Ford said the sale price was confidential but less than $2 million.

Chief executive Jon Macdonald said the site would complement Trade Me's existing portfolio of travel businesses which include Travelbug, BookIt and Holiday Houses.

Holiday Homes' Mark Greening, who founded the site with his partner in 1997, would stay on as general manager of the site, he said. "It's business as usual for existing Holiday Homes property owners,” Macdonald said.

Trade Me's main website suffered a brief outage this yesterday. About half its members were unable to access the site for 10 minutes.

Trade Me is owned by stuff.co.nz publisher Fairfax.
