Former InternetNZ chief executive Vikram Kumar has joined Kim Dotcom's Mega as its chief executive in a surprise move.

Kumar resigned from InternetNZ, which manages New Zealand's internet space, last month and the appointment is likely to lend a further air of legitimacy to Dotcom's new file locker service.

Kumar had been sympathetic to Dotcom during his tenure at InternetNZ, refusing to criticise a controversial plan by Dotcom to launch a new music service, Megabox, that would let internet users replace a proportion of adverts served up by third party websites with advertisements dished up by Mega.

Mega said in a statement that 2.5 million people had registered to use Mega since the mostly-free service was launched on January 20.
