Jetstar kicked off the first Boeing 787 commercial flight across the Tasman yesterday with the aircraft touching down in Auckland after a flight from Melbourne.

The Dreamliner will fly between the cities three times a week for the next month as Jetstar aims to give local travellers a chance to experience the long haul aircraft.

Jetstar was the first Asia Pacific low cost carrier to get the Dreamliner, receiving its first aircraft in September last year. It has three Dreamliners in its fleet with more on order and will have moved to an all-787 long haul fleet by 2015, replacing Airbus A330 aircraft.

"The Dreamliner is a destination in itself and we're pleased that over the next month thousands of Kiwis will be able to experience this unique long haul aircraft at trans-Tasman prices,'' NZ Jetstar head Grant Kerr said.

Jetstar's 787s carry 335 customers with 21 business class seats and 314 seats in economy. Full business class service will not be offered on the trans-Tasman schedule, business seats can be bought as extra leg room seats.

The 787 uses 20 per cent less fuel than similarly sized aircraft.
