Australian tourists have pushed the number of visitor in February to a record level for the time of year.
More than 301,000 visitors arrived in New Zealand in February, a 7 per cent jump on February 2013.
But Statistics NZ figures released today also show fewer tourists from China and Hong Kong, due to the earlier timing of Chinese New Year. That was more than made up for by the rise in visitors from across the Tasman.
There were also more visitors from the United States and Germany in February 2014, compared with last year.
In the year to February 2014, visitor arrivals reached 2.77 million, up 7 per cent from the February 2013 year.
On other side of the ledger New Zealanders took almost 117,000 overseas trips in February 2014, up 6 per cent from February 2013 and a record for a February month.
Over the year, New Zealand residents took 2.21 million trips, up 2 per cent from the previous year.
The most common destinations were Australia (1.03 million), the United States (145,300), Fiji (114,100), and the United Kingdom (96,100).
