Auckland's Garth Barfoot was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit at an investiture ceremony at Government House in Auckland today.

The honour was for services to business, sport and the community.

Barfoot, who has been a director of family-owned real estate agency Barfoot and Thompson for 45 years, fought back tears of happiness when he talked about the moment he found out he would be presented with the honour.

He said the New Year honours were announced when he was in France with the New Zealand Triathlon team. The team had just won the gold medal and he went to bed that night, then heard his phone "ping".

Barfoot said he knew what the "ping" was, but he could not tell anybody.

But they knew. He went downstairs and there was a congratulatory note for him on the team medal board.

"It was very emotive."

But Barfoot said he would be too busy to sit back and soak up the honour this evening.

Barfoot & Thompson had just been announced as a sponsor of the 2017 World Masters' Games, he said.

And he would be back in his sports gear this afternoon to shoot a television feature.
