Fletcher Building has confirmed former chief executive Ralph Waters will succeed Roderick Deane as chairman.

Dr Deane will step down at the end of the month after 16 years on the board, nine as chairman. During that time he oversaw the breakup of the Fletcher group of companies and relisted the building arm as Fletcher Building. Dr Deane said it had been a "hugely satisfying"experience.

Mr Waters, who is an independent non-executive director, praised Dr Deane for his significant contribution to the company, now the largest building materials firm in Australia and New Zealand.
