Fake $100 and $50 notes are believed to be circulating in Auckland after the third case of a counterfeit note being used in as many months.

A fake $100 note was used on Tuesday by a man to pay for a coffee at the Pak'nSave supermarket in Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore, police said.

Constable Simon Hooker said it was the third time since October that a fake note had been used on the North Shore.

A fake $50 note was used to pay for goods at a North Shore butcher shop just before Christmas, and in late October a fake $50 note was used at a Glenfield clothing shop.

A 21-year-old woman was charged with misuse of a document in relation to the Glenfield incident, and Hooker said inquiries to establish where the note originated from were continuing.

The man who used the false $100 note at Pak'nSave is being sought by police. He is described as a European man with ginger hair. He was riding a mountain bike and wearing a red backpack.

Hooker said police were trying to establish whether the cases were linked but reminded shop keepers to be vigilant.

"If you're receiving a large denomination of money, take a look closely at the notes," he said.

"If the paper feels odd or it just doesn't look right, contact the police."
