Scam artists in Auckland are offering fake supermarket prizes to trick people into revealing their pin numbers, police have warned.

In two reported cases on the North Shore victims have had their wallets stolen before receiving a call asking them to provide a four digit number to retrieve a grocery hamper prize from Countdown.

The fraudsters have pinned their hopes on the victims unwittingly revealing their credit card or EFTPOS codes, Constable Damian Albert said.

Albert said the caller was the same person who stole the wallets and that they were attempting to withdraw money from their accounts.

He said the offender or offenders were extremely convincing.

"Because the callers aren't outright asking for your pin number, it's easy to be tricked," he said.

"A lot of people, if asked to think of a four digit number, would give the same number they use as their pin, because it's easy to remember."

In both cases the wallets were stolen from the victim's workplace.

The investigations into both thefts are ongoing.

Albert said Countdown had been used as the fake prize in these cases, but there may be similar scams using other businesses.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who has had their cards recently stolen on the North Shore and has then experienced this type of phone call," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Albert on 09 213 7811.
