Slice of Puhoi paddling paradise for sale
Puhoi River Canoe Hire has been run from a beautiful homestead for the last 26 years. Kathy and Cody Mankelow's beloved property is on the market for the first time.
Historic Puhoi Village was originally settled by people from Bohemia in the mid-1800s, Kathy Mankelow's ancestors among them.
After working overseas the couple returned to the settlement in 1989 to start their own family.
* On the ladder: 'Flatties mean three-plus incomes service the mortgage'
* On the ladder: Two years of saving and two years of renovation on a 'do-up'

A weekend kayaking business from home was set up so so Kathy could stay at home while her babies grew up. Kathy's grandfather gifted her some Bonus Bonds, kick-starting the enterprise. Good old-fashioned hard-work meant it grew bigger every year.
Their two daughters Samara and Amber went to school in Orewa and are now in their 20s. Samara was head girl, and growing up both were active in surf lifesaving and swimming. After an idyllic, typical Kiwi childhood both girls are now embarking on their own careers.
Dad Cody says both girls have mastered the skill of carrying a lot of lifejackets on each arm at the same time, useful when it starts raining.
The couple now feels it's now time for a change, and a chance to start new projects.
"We're proud of our Kiwi family connections," Kathy says. "The business has grown but it's time for someone else to take it to the next level."
Starting with just six kayaks, an old Bedford van and a dream, Puhoi River Canoe Hire currently accommodates up to 70 kayakers per trip.
The 8km kayak trip to Wenderholm on the high tide is popular for corporate team building, day trippers, tourists and families.
Cody says repeat business makes the job rewarding. "We get people who came here as children and now bring their own children for a paddle. One guy has done the kayak trip 15 times."
Years of experience mean it's a well organised, tidy set-up, and also a friendly, warm family operation.
The family's three bedroom home, originally relocated from Remuera, has always had a warm, family feel about it.
Inside is a bright, airy living area, welcoming dining area, spacious kitchen, home office, laundry and two bathrooms.
Beautiful wooden floors and high ceilings add to the charm villas like these inherently possess.
Each bedroom has its own character and special features, with rooms leading out to a wrap-around verandah.
A hidden gem is a fully-fenced pool with a wonderful cabana complete with barbecue and relaxing couches - a place to enjoy and entertain.
A workshop is nestled beside the pool house and there is ample parking out front.
Pristine lawns circle the home, and down by the river is a 'wind in the willows' area where you can pitch a tent, or string some lights for a child's dream party.
'Puhoi' is a Maori name and translates to 'slow-water' referring to the slow gentle ebb and flow of the tide.
This idyllic lifestyle package will appeal to those wanting to create the next chapter in this property's history.
