Plea for cyclists in CBD plan
Cycling and car advocates say new transport plans for central Christchurch need to provide more for cyclists.
Among the Christchurch Central Development Unit's (CCDU) draft Accessible City transport plan released on Thursday are proposals to reduce speed limits in some central Christchurch streets to 30kmh, cut the number of bus routes into the city, and make Kilmore and Salisbury streets two-way streets again.
A number of off-road cycle routes have been included, along with cycle-parking facilities at various points and separate cycle lanes.
Cycling advocacy group Spokes was "hopefully optimistic, but concerned" about the plan. Spokesman Dirk de Lu said the group had hoped to see more of a "commitment" to cycling from the CCDU.
New Zealand Automobile Association Canterbury chairman Warren Masters said he was "pleasantly surprised".
"It's a very good compromise for all modes of transport. We have no problem with what has been planned.
"We'd like to see however, where possible, designated cycle lanes."
Environment Canterbury (ECan), which will pay for some roading and public transport, welcomed the plan.
Commissioner Rex Williams said ECan was "closely involved" in the plan's development and saw it as an opportunity to preserve key corridors for future public transport possibilities beyond buses.
Public submissions on the draft plan close on February 1.
