A popular Auckland eatery that was found to harbour cockroaches, use mouldy curry paste and employ staff lacking understanding of hygiene practices like washing hands and wearing protective clothing has opened again.
The Golden Tulip on Dominion Road was given an E food grade rating after a routine inspection by Auckland Council in February and this week owners were fined almost $4000 by the Auckland District Court.
It has since been declared fit to open after a series of reinspections - now with a B grade following changes to how staff comply with food regulations.
"Auckland Council was extremely concerned about the Golden Tulip's disregard for the health of its customers" said Manager of Environmental Health, Mervyn Chetty.
"Preparing contaminated food and having such a poor grasp of food safety and hygiene practices is a serious public health risk."
The Auckland Council food safety bylaw came into force in July 2013, introducing a regional grading system based on compliance and risk with a requirement that at least half of food handlers have to be trained in food hygiene to pass.
