Expansion is on the radar for Waikato company Aerosport Aviation.

The Matangi-based company distributes light sports aircraft throughout the Asia, Pacific and Australasia regions with exclusive distribution rights for SportsCruiser planes made by aeronautics manufacturer Czech Sport Aircraft.

With the manufacturer building a new multimillion dollar factory in China, production is set to jump and Aerosport director and owner Anton Meier is expecting to triple the size of his business, hoping to sell 25 of the aircraft a year.

The recently-opened factory will make a new version of the SportsCruiser and  Meier said he would now have a continuous supply of product.

He hopes to be able to offer the competitive price of $165,000 or even under, he said.

Aerosport is family-operated and has support teams in Australia and Indonesia. The support bases are likely to increase because of the expected growth, he said.

The SportsCruiser is a two seat, single engine aircraft with a cruise speed of 214 km per hour which was introduced in 2006.

The aircraft’s market is recreational pilots, businesses, farmers and flight schools for pilot training. Meier has been in business 10 years and has sold 80 aircraft in that time.
