A New Zealand-designed and made cycle-seat storage unit is ready to go to market should a crowd funding equity website provide the kick-start it needs.

The Cyckit Aeroclam - designed by Hamilton entrepreneur Pat Reardon - is a small, zipperless compartment which fits under bicycle seats.

Reardon, a graphic and concept designer and illustrator by trade, is now hoping to raise $20,000 on crowd funding website Kickstarter to send Aeroclam to market.

But so far pledges towards the project have been a bit slow.

Reardon said he designed and built the aerodynamic unit with the intention of making a cycle storage compartment which was functional, durable and stylish, something he felt was missing from the market.

"We've put a lot of style into it as well as functionality."

Aeroclam was just big enough to store a tube, CO2 canister and applicator, a slimline multi-tool and two tyre levers.

The zipperless unit was made of injected moulded plastic which would not rot or degrade like canvas products could, he said.

All the tools and manufacturing used to build Aeroclam were designed and made in Hamilton.

Cyckit worked with Auckland incubation hub The Icehouse in validating its market and was now in its incubation programme.

Why did you start your own business?

So I could promote my own ideas and build a brand globally.

What have been the biggest obstacles in starting up your business?

Finance! Paying the bills and having to work to make our limited budget stretch all the way to launch date. Also unforeseen costs. No matter how hard you try to foresee there will always be something(s) not accounted for.

Name one thing you have learnt in your business journey so far and from who?

Market validation. Do it right and do it thoroughly to not only make sure there is a market for your product but just as importantly this will give you confidence once you start investing tens of thousands of dollars in the business.

What are your business and personal goals?

To succeed and to succeed.

Do you have any tips for budding entrepreneurs?

Be thorough on market validation. This is what will give you confidence, focus and the tenacity to see your project through.
