Royal Dutch Shell is warning that acts of sabotage against its pipelines in the oil-rich southern delta of Nigeria are increasing.

Shell issued a statement Sunday saying its Nigerian subsidiary had suffered at least three separate incidents of sabotage on its pipelines this month alone.

The company said the lines showed signs of drilled holes and hacksaw cuts from thieves trying to steal crude oil.

Shell said it was working to clean up oil spills caused by the sabotage and repair the lines.

Militants have fought against foreign oil majors and government troops since an insurrection began in the southern Niger Delta in 2006. Violence has waned in recent months after an amnesty deal.

Nigeria is one of the top crude oil suppliers to the US.
