BMW has announced a global recall of more than half a million cars over an electrical fault.

In New Zealand, however, only 32 vehicles have been identified for the recall to check a faulty battery connection, which could cause the vehicle to stall. They are a mix of 1 Series and 3 Series, manufactured between 2007 and 2011.

According to a release from the company, ''the positive battery cable connection and corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time’’, which may cause ''a breakage of the connection and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle’’.

The Detroit News reports that BMW is aware of one incident in which a car did stall and the vehicle crashed, but no-one was injured. BMW is unaware of any reported instances of this happening in New Zealand.

BMW NZ will be proactively contacting each of the 32 owners and scheduling them to bring their car to a dealership to have the possible fault fixed.

However, if people have concerns, they can contact their nearest authorised BMW dealership and speak with the Service Department who will be able to quickly advise by way of registration or chassis number if their car is one of those affected.

The dealer will fit a new cable end, it will take approximately two hours and the work will be completed at no cost to the customer.
