Unemployment in the United Kingdom increased to 7.6 percent as the number of people out of work rose by a record 281,000 in the March-May quarter.

The unemployment rate was up from 7.2 percent in the three months to April, the Office for National Statistics said.

The total number of unemployed rose to 2.38 million.

More than 300,000 people lost their jobs in the period, the second highest figure on record, and an increase of 31,000 over the previous quarter, the agency said.
