The wife of an elderly man who died after his car rolled down a steep bank was trapped with him overnight before the couple were found this morning.
The man and his wife were visiting a Puketapu Rd property, just north of Napier, last night when the car ran off a driveway, rolled up to 30 metres down a bank, hit a tree and came to a stop upside down.
The car was discovered this morning about 9am by the property owners. The man was found dead with his wife who had been trapped in the car overnight. She was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition but it was not known if she was conscious when found.
Police said it was unclear why or when exactly the car left the gravel road. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
The man's name will not be released until all family have been notified.
