A man died and two others were seriously injured when a stolen car rolled near the Hutt Valley end of Haywards Hill overnight.
A police communications spokesman said the accident, on Hebden Cres, was discovered about 6:30am and the Westpac rescue helicopter was called to the scene.
Another man was choppered to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition, and is now in a serious but stable condition. A woman transported to Hutt Hospital by ambulance remains in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit..
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman at the scene said the three people were extricated from the 1996 Honda Civic, which went off the road into a bank via the rear window.
"The vehicle was partially on its side up against shrubbery and a bank," the Free Ambulance spokesman said.
Hebden Cres runs parallel with the Western Hutt Road and the spokesman said there was only one vehicle involved in the accident.
The fire service erected emergency lighting to assist the early morning recovery operation.
The police serious crash unit is conducting an investigation at the scene.
