The hunt for a sexual predator believed to have attacked women on a staircase in central Wellington has a new lead.

Police are looking for the owner of a silver-white Hyundai Getz hatchback caught on CCTV cameras close to the scene of the attack early on Saturday, April 19.

They have urged the owner to come forward so they can be eliminated from the inquiry.

Over Easter weekend two women were attacked on the steps between The Terrace and Boyd Wilson Field, on the Victoria University campus.

The attacks happened less than 24 hours apart and police believe they are linked.

In the first incident, a woman was attacked as she walked home from the city about 1.55am on April 19. She screamed and fought off the man, who ran down towards The Terrace.

Less than 24 hours later another woman was attacked in the same area on the path to her house.

In both cases the attacker was described as European, of medium build, about 180 centimetres tall, with light-coloured facial hair, and wearing a grey- hooded sweatshirt.

Police issued a photofit of the man, but no arrests have been made.

Several previous incidents had occurred on the staircase with people urged to avoid using it at night.

On March 23, a woman walking home in Fairlie Tce was attacked by a man, but managed to fight him off and get home.

It was not clear if it was the same man who committed the latest attacks in the area.

The university posted security guards on the staircase after the April incidents.
