The Manawatu Jets produced their best performance of the season so far to upset the Wellington Saints 100-89 in Palmerston North tonight.
At opposite ends of the table, the second-to-last Jets finally hit their straps to pick up win number three of the campaign, knocking over the second-placed Saints.
In an impressive first half, Manawatu scored 53 points and defended well against a strong Wellington team for a 11-point halftime lead.
After going ahead by 14 points the Jets faded late in the third, where they only scored 11 points and found themselves down by six. The Saints had imports Brandon Bowman (28 points) and Bryan Davies (21) dominating and looked as if they would take the game away from the home team.
But Jets import small forward Paul Jones had other ideas and single-handedly dragged them back into the game, scoring seven straight points to lock the scores up at 81-all late in the fourth.
Nick Horvath came up with a big block on Bowman and Jones whipped down the other end for the lay up. Jeremiah Trueman then grabbed a crucial defensive rebound to keep the Saints out of the game before Jones went on to ice a free throw.
Jones then grabbed a steal and the lay up to give him 40 points for the match, as well as eight rebounds. He was running the show for the Jets along with point guard Brandon Jenkins, who scored 22 points.
Horvath grabbed yet another double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds and Troy McLean scored 12 points.
Saints point guard Lindsay Tait scored 13 points, with six assists and 10 rebounds, but didn't have the impact on the game he could have had.
Corey Webster scored 17 points but was quiet in the second half.
Manawatu Jets 100 (Paul Jones 40, Brandon Jenkins 22, Nick Horvath 14/14, Troy McLean 12) Wellington Saints 89 (Brandon Bowman 28, Bryan Davies 21/10, Corey Webster 17, Lindsay Tait 13). 1Q: 23-22, HT: 53-42, 3Q: 64-70
