Motorists are being told to be patient after a crash on SH1 near Johnsonville, north of Wellington.
Two cars have crashed on the highway, south of the Helston Rd overbridge, and are blocking traffic in the right-hand fast lane, a police central communications spokesman said.
Nobody was injured in the crash just after 5.30pm and police are working to clear the area.
Meanwhile, an elderly woman was trapped in her car earlier this after after a rubbish truck rear-ended her vehicle in Lower Hutt, just north of Wellington.
The woman had to be cut out of her car following the crash just before 5pm.
She was taken to Hutt Hospital with minor injuries, police central communications spokesman Peter Theobald said.
The incident happened in the southbound lane on SH2, near the intersection of Grounsell Crescent, but traffic was continuing to flow freely.
