Police have named the Levin woman who died after being hit by a delivery truck.

Jennifer Frances Harding, 74, died after she was hit by the truck shortly before 1pm yesterday while walking on Bath St, Levin.

Levin Sergeant Jeff Lyver said the 5-tonne truck reversed into a service lane on the street behind the town's community centre, Te Takere, striking the woman and running her over.

Harding suffered "horrific" injuries but was stabilised at the scene before being taken by ambulance to the Horowhenua Health Centre, and then flown to Wellington Hospital.

Lyver said Harding, who was with family members when she was hit, died on the way to hospital about 2.45pm.

Police had spoken to several witnesses and would speak to more.

Levin Senior Sergeant Sarn Paroli said the driver was "shaken" by the incident, but it was too early to say whether any charges would be laid.

Harding's family were too distraught to be interviewed last night.

Witness Rayvon Tamatea, 16, said he was standing outside the community centre when Harding and her sister ran across from the other side of the street and were walking between parked cars beside the community centre.

The truck had pulled out of the service lane toward the road but then reversed in, he said.

Tamatea, who called the ambulance, said the women walked behind the reversing truck, but only one of them made it past.

He yelled at the truck driver to stop but he didn't think he heard him. The driver would not have had much time to see the women, he said.

People rushed to the scene from "everywhere" following the incident and the street was clogged with people, he said.

He said the accident was "horrible" and had left a police officer visibly upset, he said.

Paroli said the serious crash unit, the commercial vehicle investigation unit and Levin CIB were all investigating.
