Police are searching for two women thought to have been behind a "brazen" armed robbery of a petrol station north of Napier.

The pair, believed to be women, confronted two staff members at the Young Motors Mobil service station in Bay View shortly after 8pm last night.

Police said the robbers took tobacco and a small amount of cash from the Main North Road premises, leaving staff members shaken but uninjured.

The women were armed with "a number of weapons" although police did not say what types.

Police said the pair ran to a blue or green Ford Falcon last seen heading south towards Napier.

Detective Sergeant John McCarthy from Hawke's Bay CIB said the service station was on a main road and there had been steady traffic at the time of the robbery.

"This was a brazen and frightening attack on two staff members and we are keen to speak to anyone who has information on who was responsible for it."McCarthy said police were keen to hear from anyone who had been offered cheap tobacco since the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged by Hawke's Bay police to contact McCarthy on 06 831 0700 or provide details anonymously at Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
