A Mongrel Mob member stabbed on Saturday is staying mum about how he was wounded.
Kapiti senior sergeant Anita Dixon said the 43-year-old man's partner called an ambulance to their house in Paraparaumu on Saturday at about 3:45pm.
The man had a single stab wound, thought to be from a knife, and was taken to Wellington Hospital where he has since had surgery.
His partner told emergency services phone operators the injury was self-inflicted, but police do not believe that is the case, Dixon said.
The man was ''not forthcoming'' about how he was injured, and police do not know where or when the stabbing took place.
''We believe this will probably be in-house; a gang in-house incident,'' Dixon said.
''He's probably being punished.''
Police are examining the house the man was picked up from, and inquiries are continuing, she said.
A Capital Coast District Health Board spokesperson said the man remains in hospital in a stable condition.
