One woman is in a critical condition and another injured after a car hit a pole in Napier this morning.

Acting Senior Sergeant Clint Adamson said police were called to the scene on Eriksen Road just after 3.30am.

"The impact [of the pole] was straight through the driver's side of the car," he said.

The driver, a 28-year-old local woman, was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with critical injuries. Her passenger, a 36-year-old local woman, suffered moderate injuries.

Adamson said police were looking for any witnesses who may have seen the vehicle - a 1995 Ford Fairmont coloured purple - driving around Napier in the hours before 3.30am.

The serious crash unit attended the scene. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
